The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, and related issues based on sound public policy, the best available science, and efficient management. <ref>United States Department of Agriculture </ref>

Despite its mission statement, for fiscal year 2008, 59% of its budget is for food assistance programs, and 19% of its budget is for farm and commodity programs. Less than 6% of its budget is spent on research.

The current Secretary of Agriculture is former Governor, Tom Vilsack.
