The Community Emergency Response Team program is sponsored by FEMA's Citizen Corps. These teams are usually called CERTs, but are also termed Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams (NERTs) or Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs) to avoid confusion with Police Special Emergency Response Teams (SERTs). CERT's are community organizations which are established to assist local emergency response agencies such as fire departments. The CERT program participants are trained in disaster preparedness, and basic search and rescue.
